Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    persistent swollen tonsils ?
Ok, before anyone answers this question I just want to inform you that I am pretty knowledgeable in this whole tonsils deal, so please refrain from responses concerning ice pops, gargling salt water, etc. I've been looking for over 2 years for some good help with little success. I apologize ahead of time as this is quite a long post. I have a bad habit of including way too many details. I pasted this in word and did the best editing I can to shorten it up. I just wanted to give the best description possible of my condition.
Two years ago I came down with a severe case of tonsillitis. I was 20 at the time, and remember always having a history of food and bacteria getting caught up in the tonsils whenever I was sick. This time although, was directly focused on the tonsils with extreme pain. In fact the worst pain I've ever had related to soar thought, strep, or any other ear nose and through sickness in my lifetime other than when I had mono at 17. I went to a walk in clinic after about 3 days of severe pain, high fever, and a slow loss of my ability to swallow. The doctors and assistants were astonished at the size of my tonsils and repeatedly asked me if I was able to swallow. Not really understanding their severity in the question, I responded with yes. At the time I was in fact still able to swallow, it was just very painful. The doctor gave me that blister pack of a week antibiotic treatment and a script for vicopropen to ease the pain and hopefully let me eat and drink something. Before I left the doctor told me if things got worse to go to the ER.
After taking one of the vicopropen and the first two tablets of the antibiotic my fever went down, I was able to drink without so much pain, and swallow slightly solid food. I attempted at eating a piece of pizza but that didn’t get farther than the first bite.

Fast forward 5 hours and 3 more pain killers I am in a world of bliss and 95% unable to swallow, talk, breath, etc. I was in such a care free mood that when my sister and my mother’s cousin saw how much pain I was really in they pretty much had to force me to go to the ER. I sat in the waiting room in serious pain for over an hour before I was finally brought in. Once again the nurses were amazed at the size of my tonsils, acknowledged the severity of my condition and let me wait for another hour on the hospital bed. At this point I hadn’t had any liquids for hours and was so dehydrated I could hardly speak. I was told I sounded like the godfather lol. Finally a doctor came in of course he too acted in astonishment and from there on they finally responded as they should have at first. Never will understand why they took forever with both the lady at the desk and the nurses that put me in the room 2 hours apart from each other telling me “WOW we need to get you into a room and hydrated ASAP. It was as if they had forgotten, twice, lol.

They gave me a hydromorphone (brand name diludid) for pain, hydrated me up, and a steroid to reduce swelling all via IV around 1 AM. I went home around 9 in the morning and the swelling had reduced, the pain was almost gone, I was able to eat and drink and felt like a million bucks. I took the new 30 count script of a stronger antibiotic until it was empty even though after 3 days I felt 100% back to normal.
Two years later, although the shape, tears, and lumps I had developed at that time have disappeared the swelling never really went down. I now have enlarged tonsils that catch food particles from time to time and cause major discomfort in my throat and neck area. My voice sounds as if I have marbles in my mouth, and sometimes I find it difficult to talk at a loud enough voice for people to hear. I’ve always been told I mumble, but it seems now that speaking loud takes extra effort and does not vibrate and project like it should or used to. Tilting my head looking skyward I can feel and hear a lack of airflow.

I smoke around 2-5 cigarettes a day, wasn’t a smoker when I first had this happen. I quit in late December of 07 because I determined the cause of constantly catching food particles to be the main cause. It was and I saw a drop in occurrence. Unfortunately I started a new job where every single person smokes inside and outside of the building and I picked the habit up again. I told myself if the food particles returned as they were before I would stop.
As far as the enlarged tonsils go, they seem to fluctuate in size regardless of being sick, healthy, smoking or not smoking. That has stayed consistent. Quitting smoking did stop the food particles almost completely. There was a time where I was pulling them out daily, sometimes struggling for weeks to finally get one out. VERY annoying I tell you!

The past few days my neck has been pretty swollen, and although my tonsils have never swelled back to the size while being sick, they still are noticeably large. I did talk to an ear nose and through doctor sometime in late 2006, and he gave me the
the same antibiotic they gave when I was in the ER, but it didn’t help and I missed an appointment and denied me to come back. I know the trouble with having someone finally agree to remove them, and that’s not really the route I would like to go. I have only gotten sick one other time, just about a year after the first case, but not as acute. I have no insurance so the doctor is out of the question, which I prefer anyways. I found some info on homeopathy remedies, but found it entirely too confusing as it doesn’t explain anything except what the remedy should be used for, where can i get them, how do i use them?

Any advice besides “gargle salt water” or “go see a doctor” is appreciated. I just want something to take the swelling down possibly natural. There has to be something. They cause too much discomfort and not being able to breathe and speak normal sucks.
looks like i am going to have to apply for state insurance. I see all of your points. My ex girlfriend had hers removed but it took years before they finally did it, which meant she had come down with tonsillitis numerous times, with each case being worse than the previous. I dont know, i guess it makes sence, my sister had hers removed when she was younger. I just wonder about the first line of defense being non existant.

I would imagine if I went to the doc and told him I am having breathing complications due to the swelling he would react, but from my previous expereinces he will just write me a stupid script and tell me to come back and spend more money i dont have in a week so he can "diagnose"

its almost scary how much my ex's voice changed after her surgery, she sounded like a completly different person.

i guess i already knew the answer its just i've been dealing with it for two years now and only sometimes do they bother me, i figured i would just check to see

    thanks

The answer is, get your tonsils removed. I'm not quite sure why you've let it get to this point.

  2. QUESTION:
i had viral fever few days back i have taken antibiotics now i have developed rashes all over the body?
there iching all over the body.i have also developed tonsils.they appear together.i m taking treatment for tonsils now. but can tonsils and rashes be reaction to allergy from medicines? can they appear after a week i took the medicines for treatment.can it be possible that thers a gap of week or soo? what should i do ?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,

Sounds like the skin reactions that I was having two to three years ago when I had an antibiotic for a week and flared up real bad. At the time I was having urticaria allergic reactions to foods and my own sweat and who knows what other toxins, that would then promote fungal infections from my weakened immune system. I eventually learned to make the right organic nutritional choices that allowed my immune system and organs to rebuild and get stronger.

IF YI - my own skin-urticaria issues have cost about ,500 in the last three years to learn what I now know - which is that ALL skin diseases are strongly related to one's micro-nutrition and/or toxic absorption and/or hygiene and/or parasites.

My allergic reactions continually cause small water blisters along with skin fevers and itches and then rashes and then long term scaling. When my malady was at its worst - I used to have allergic itches to my own sweat that I was burning off after showering or during exercise or when parts of my body got hot - during a time in my life when I used to have considerable toxins stored within my body fat and ‘very’ weakened immune and filter systems.

Monistat 7 and Desenex are moist-area anti-fungals and Head and Shoulders is also an anti-fungal, but you really need to see an MD and do more internet research to better understand how difficult it is for an MD to diagnose serious skin maladies. Use meds that are prescribed in a very minimal way so that your body’s immune system's and skin/ organs can repair and grow stronger, which will then prevent reoccurrences in the future.

Since when I was an asthmatic teen and could not use deodorants without rashing up, my life long triggers have taught me to use hypo-allergenic non-perfumed soaps in a minimal way and to sometimes powder different portions of my body with cornstarch to help minimize yeast infections; especially whenever my micro-nutritional absorption within my gut has been less than was necessary to adequately repair my body’s immune system, organs, and skin on a daily basis.

Even though I might not have answered your question as ‘specifically’ as you may have wanted, to help you with simple and concise information on ALL itch rash illnesses and for short and long term solutions to them ALL - the following link has considerable info within a ‘report’ I recently posted on Y_A:

The report at qid=20091113104039AAbnGet is an accumulation of my own investigations into itch rash illnesses that are due to my own non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, even though I have a fairly low BMI of 26.

I eventually learned that itching or rashes are symptoms of maladies that could become much worse if not healed with better non-toxic and more ‘dense’ micro-nutritional choices. Since doctors were not very helpful and it ‘almost’ took too long to learn what I now try to teach others, I now take a little time each week to help others understand the need for non-toxic and ‘adequate’ micro-nutritional absorption in the gut AND for good hygiene - which will then prevent or minimize every ‘dis-ease’ I am aware of.

Finally, because I am not an MD who could diagnose you ‘personally,’ I feel I should add that although I have seen that most root problems for 'skin' issues for myself and others has usually ‘always’ been from long and or short term allergic reactions to 'something' or poor hygiene COMBINED WITH a weakened lymph liver kidney skin and immune systems - IF the following symptoms would ever occur - I ‘think’ the worst rash one might possibly have quickly acquired is from deadly bacterial meningitis, ALTHOUGH bacterial meningitis would be VERY RARE.

The two quotes below are from: <> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacterial_Meningitis <>

      <>
“IF a rash is present, it may indicate a particular cause of meningitis; for instance, meningitis caused by meningococcal bacteria may be accompanied by a characteristic rash.”
      <>

      <>
“The MOST common symptoms of meningitis are headache and neck stiffness associated with fever, confusion or altered consciousness, vomiting, and an inability to tolerate light (photophobia) or loud noises (phonophobia). SOMETIMES, especially in small children, only nonspecific symptoms may be present, such as irritability and drowsiness.”
      <>

      For further details see: <> http://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/about/faq.html <>

      <><>

I truly truly hope that what you might rapidly learn in the next few minutes will help you to decide on the correct choices that will remedy your painful malady in the future.

  3. QUESTION:
Had a check up with my 18 mo old son's ear, nose, throat specialist, should I get a second opinion?
Took my son for his 6 month tube check-up today and to ask about his ongoing allergy problems, i.e. runny nose as long as I can recall, swollen tonsils and adenoids, throat looking spongy. He prescribed Singulair 4mg granules once daily as a decongestant and R-Tanna Pediatric Suspension 1 mL 2x daily as an antihistamine (he was on Zyrtec, but it did nothing). These two meds are to be taken for 4 weeks and, if no improvement, I need to bring him back in and we start a course of long-term antibiotic treatment. My son has had problems with antibiotic induced thrush in the past so I am unsure about that. Anyway, if the antibiotic does not work he wants to take out his tonsils and adenoids. Does this course of treatment sound okay or should I get a second opinion. As young as he is I am very hesitant to have surgery performed on him of this magnitude. I know I let him get tubes, but that was after 7 ear infections in 5 months-I couldn't stand to see him suffer anymore with the pain the infections caused him. ANY advice please. FYI-no pets, no smokers, hepa filter for vacuum and air conditioning system, clean environment, we use a humidifier and my mother-in-law is bringing us a purifier, only food allergy is cow's milk protein. He is such a good child despite how bad he must feel, he is my world, I just want to do my best for him. Thank you for your time.

    • ANSWER:
i absolutely would get a second opinion. problems of this magnitude i think it would be bordering on irresponsible to NOT get second opinion.

in my opinion, i would think that just going straight for the surgery would be best.

my SiL just had her tonsils out- at age 28- after having had problems since she was a child. there's somethings that can never be fixed after all those years of damage, and there was a lot of suffering in the mean time. if they'd just done that in the first place, it would've be so much simpler.

  4. QUESTION:
should health care workers undergo treatment with high risk of complications?
3 It describes the interesting case of a nurse, working in a hospital in Den Bosch, who remained MRSA positive, even after treatment with various antibiotics. Here follows a translation of a statement by the bacteriologist, A Leenders, contained in that article: "One of the nurses, on her own initiative, suggested to the specialist that she should have her tonsils removed, because it was suspected that the MRSA resided in this organ. At the time it was uncertain whether the operation would change the MRSA status of the nurse. After the tonsillectomy, tests showed that the health worker had become MRSA negative. This indicates how far people will go. They have chosen to work in health care and they do not allow a bacterium to interfere with their vocation". I find this an altruistic attitude, but it does raise the moral question whether health care workers should undergo medical treatment with its inherent risks of complications, for the sake of the patients in their care?

    • ANSWER:
She basically was a "typhoid Mary". An asymptomatic carrier. She would have also been putting her family and loved ones at risk, so I do not think it was all that altruistic. I am in health care as well.

  5. QUESTION:
Need Advice Like NOW on Strep Throat and Tonsillitis?
Last Tuesday I came down with a horrible sore throat. One of the worst I have ever had. It was very painful to swallow etc. Looking in my throat with a flashlight, my tonsils were red, very swollen, and had some pus on them. I assumed it was strep throat because I had NO other cold symptoms. Just a headache, and sick to my stomach.
So I would have gone to the doctor but I don't have health insurance right now. What I did do was start taking an antibiotic that I had on hand. It is Clarythromycin (Biaxin). I am allergic to Amoxicillian. In the past my doctor has prescribed me either Z packs (Erthyromyacin) or Clarythromycin (Biaxin) for strep.
On Thursday I started feeling better, and ventured out of the house to get some fresh air etc. Friday I was even feeling good enough to run more errands and go to dinner w/ a friend. Well yesterday evening, (Saturday) I started getting a bad sore throat again, and have now lost my voice today. Looking in my throat with the flashlight again, the white spots on my tonsils are going away and my tonsils are less swollen. BUT I have a new red-rash looking irritation with white spots on the back upper roof of my mouth. I took nyquil last night and my throat feels better today but still kinda sore, and physically I feel kinda weak. I'm staying in bed today to rest.
So my question is does it sound like I got reinfected, or that I possibly had tonsillitis first and now have strep? Or do I have Laryngitis now etc.? I have 4 more days left of the Biaxin to finish my 10 day course which I will do. And because I was having improvement I am assuming the antibiotic was working. From what I have read on Web Md and other sites is that strep symptoms are supposed to go away roughly 48 hours after antibiotic treatment. As far as tonsillitis goes I couldn't find a definitive answer. I know that if I get worse I will need to go see my doctor but I was trying to avoid that because I am out of work and broke. Answers and insight are appreciated =)

  6. QUESTION:
HELP! Serious throat problem seems to be coming back?!?
So, I am 16 and I went on a biology trip about a month ago. I got really ill and had a bacteria in my throat, which caused the following symptoms to come and cause severe suffering for over 8 days--
    - sore throat
    - swollen tonsils
    - mucus / coughing up phlegm
    - fever (for more than 5 days)
    - headaches
    - moments of heat and then chills
    - fatigue
    - gooey stuff forming in my eyes
    - clogged sinuses or runny nose

So yeah. I went to a clinic and they gave me a 5-day antibiotic treatment. The pain and symptoms went away. Now, however, it is back and seems to be worse. My symptoms are all coming back, and I looked in the back of my throat and the back of my tongue and the same bumps are forming.

This is an image of exactly what it looks like: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.cinqueterreliguria.net/foto/farm1.static.flickr.com/179/397502885_1e121877f9.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.cinqueterreliguria.net/Cinque%2520Terre/pomace/Streptococcus%2520mutans.htm%3Fiframe%3Dtrue%26width%3D100%25%26height%3D100%25&usg=__k6oYR3KZcYC0KGoFu2KlGw5BE6w=&h=375&w=500&sz=71&hl=en&start=1&zoom=1&tbnid=g9J56ZPYKmlCiM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3DStreptococcus%2Bmutans%2Bthroat%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D594%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1

  7. QUESTION:
Treating a yeast infection after antibiotics?
I just finished a round of Augmentin for a tonsil infection, and I got a yeast infection as a result. I went out and got a Monistat treatment, to use when I finished the antibiotics. I took my last antibiotic pill this morning. When should I start the Monistat treatment?

    • ANSWER:
You can start treating your yeast infection right away.
Sometimes, when you first start using Monistat, it can cause some temporary irritation but it should go away by the second day.
if you still have some irriation or it becomes worse, then you should quit the Monistat and consut your gynocologist.

  8. QUESTION:
Whats the worst that could happen if I dont get antibiotics for strep throat?
Right now it is just sore, and sometimes feels like there is a sharp pain, like glass in my throat. I do see there are white cyst like sores on my tonsils, so people are saying its strep throat. I am not having trouble talking or anything yet, so will I be fine if I go longer without treatment?
    Is it contagious?

    • ANSWER:
You could possibly develop Scarlet Fever which causes you to break out in a rash all over your body. It will last 3 months. I got it last year because the doctor I went to misdiagnosed my strep throat and it got worse. If Scarlet Fever goes untreated, you could develop Rheumatic Fever. This causes all your joints to swell and ache. Last is Rheumatiod Arthritis which will affect you for the rest of your life.

  9. QUESTION:
Does anyone know the long term affects of Serratia Marcescens if found in the throat?
Recently it became difficult to swallow..after seeing three doctors..I finally found out through a repeat culture that I had the bacteria S.Marcescens in my throat. I couldn't swallow properly, eating became difficult..and my tonsils have been swollen. It was going on for about 3 months prior to treatment with antibiotics. I took 17 days of Cipro at 750mg. But I still dont feel like i can eat properly. They are talkin of takin out my tonsils. But I dont know if this is gonna work. I'm scared...Any helpful info of SMarsecens in the throat would be helpful as i haven't been able to get any straight answers through doctors or online..Thanks

    • ANSWER:
You and your doctors are facing a problem: Serratia may be obtained on culture of the throat and yet have nothing to do with your symptoms. The problem is that medical science has not clearly idenfied a pathogenic role for Serratia when recovered from the throat. The situation is different with germs like Group A strep or certian chlamydiae. For these germs, there is ample evidence that recovery of the germ on culture of throat corresponds with a particular set of symptoms and that eradication of the organism results in cure. Nothing similar is know in relation to Serratia and the throat. So, if the Cipro eradicated your carriage of Serratia and you still have symptoms, your problem may be something else, though it may be something as small as residual enlargement of your tonsils and or adenoids. Tonsils may take a long tome to return ot normal size after inflammation. If you are getting even incrementally better, then waiting may be a good option. If not, tonsillectomy may help.

  10. QUESTION:
Is it possible for strep or tonsillitis to still get worse the first day after starting antibiotics?
I recently had sinusitis and was on Ceftin for 10 days. The Ceftin cleared up the sinus infection, but over the last couple days of taking Ceftin my tonsils were starting to get covered in white spots. A few days later they were covered in even more white stuff, so I went to my doctor who took a look at my throat and my very swollen lymph nodes on the right side (Very large and visibly swollen, although no longer very painful.) and tested me for Mono, which came back negative. He then did a throat culture test (Still awaiting results.) and said he thought it was strep throat. He started me on a 10-day course of Augmentin 875mg, twice a day.

I started treatment yesterday and today I've noticed that my throat isn't doing any better. It's more sore than it was yesterday, AND there's even more white gunk on the right side.

I've read strep usually improves a day or two after starting treatment.

Is it possible for the infection to still worsen for a day or two after starting treatment?
On a side note, I'm pretty sure it's not Oral Thrush...

Thrush usually starts in the cheeks/on your tongue, and moves back towards the tonsils. I've also been eating a decent amount of yogurt to help maintain a good balance within my body to help prevent that. I am fairly susceptible to tonsil problems quite often anyway...

Also, oral thrush wouldn't cause swollen lymph nodes, if I'm not mistaken... Either way, I've had the throat culture test done and will get the results on Monday... That will determine if it is indeed Strep, Tonsillitis, or Thrush. Guess we'll find out, eh?

On a side note, my friend's sister had strep throat the other day when we all hang out. I ended up having to sit next to her at the diner we went to, so it's a possibility if she coughed/sneezed anywhere, the droplets could've gotten in my food and I could've caught strep there.

We shall discover the answer to what this is, soon!

    • ANSWER:
I've had problems in the past with my tonsils getting infected. It takes 48 hours for the antibiotics to even start working. So yes it can get worse while you are taking them. You should have improvement in 72 hours if you don't call your doctor again. In the mean time gargle with warm salt water, that will help. Take care of yourself, and get better quick..

  11. QUESTION:
what could've caused my chronic tonsillitis?
i was confined in the hospital in December for tonsillitis, both of my tonsils were filled with exudates. The doctor put me under a 10-day treatment on antibiotics. Since then, my left tonsil has never returned to its normal size. There isnt much pain when I swallow, but it comes back every now and then especially when I hold my breath, shout or eat sweets. Would there be any way that this would return to its normal size so I wouldnt be bothered about this anymore?

  12. QUESTION:
Which antibiotics are the best for tooth abscesses (that have spread to your ear and tonsils?)?
I've been to two dentists now, neither one thought I had an abscess because the xrays showed nothing, even though I was in extreme pain - but finally the gum swelled up huge next to the tooth, and my ear is killing me, and now my tonsil / eustachian tube entrance is inflamed.... I'm taking 500 mg of Pennicilin, but it seems to be worse. Knowing you can't diagnose me, what are some possible treatment options that I can discuss with the quack I go to see?
Also, the dentist told me to take the penicillin four times a day - he stated "in the morning, at lunch, at dinner, and before bed." Is that really a good idea, to be taking penicillin every four hours and then to sleep 8 hours without taking any?

    • ANSWER:
I don't understand why you haven't had treatment to alleviate the abscess?! Antibiotics alone are not reliable as you are finding out. It would seem that your teeth are intact because neither dentist could easily find it, so assuming the tooth has now been identified, then he/she should at least establish an access hole into the pulp chamber and give the root canals a light cleaning. Then your antibiotics will start to work.
Or, if you don't want an RCT, then extract immediately. Had a patient like you today with swollen face and started antibiotics y'day from medico. Didn't want RCT so pulled it out. Problem solved. Why prolong the agony and the chance that the antibiotics may not work?
Why do people insist that the swelling must go down first? Geez, if you have an infected splinter in your skin, do you take antibiotics first before pulling it out? The only difficulty that sometimes arises is that establishing local anaesthesia is a bit more difficult, but NOT impossible.
Finally, finding abscesses on Xrays is not always reliable, and other tests should also have been conducted i.e. percussion and thermal tests.

  13. QUESTION:
Link between Wet hair/ Chronic Bronchitis/ Tonsils/ Recurring colds?
I have a long history of always getting sick when I sleep with my hair remotely wet.

The worst, was one time when I was 12, I had gone swimming with my cousins, didn't have a private place to change into dry clothes, no towels, so I slipped a long tee shirt over my wet bathing suit. It was getting late, so we drove off. The air was cool, and I fell asleep. Someone opened the window and left it open for the half-hour ride home. When I stepped out of the car, I couldn't talk, and I got really sick. The doctor told me I had Chronic Bronchitis due to Streptococcus. I thought I was going to get Pneumonia, seriously! Now, I do understand that Bronchitis and Pneumonia are caused by bacteria, but are they always caused by bacteria? How is chilling of the body, especially the head related to immunosuppression? I've done research and found NOTHING.

When I was in middle school, I had a stupid habit of sleeping with my hair wet, and I mean straight out of the shower wet. It had something to do with my hair being curly and feeling more manageable when wet... whatever, it was a stupid idea because with every time I did that, I would get sicker. Keep in mind, that I wasn't already sick when I did this, so it's not like it was only making a preexisting cold worse. Eventually, I had to stop because I would get really sick anytime I did this, even if it was warm weather. So I would go to sleep just fine, with my hair wet, and wake up with shortness of breath, chest and
upper back pain when inhaling, plugged nose (with no mucus), and as if I had a thick mucous deep down my throat that wouldn't let me breathe efficiently. The worst symptom, and the reason why I stopped was that I felt a peculiar headache-like pain in the the occipital section (lower back of my head), followed by tonsillitis, pain and difficulty swallowing, and sometimes even earaches a day later. Now, each time I did this wasn't one time after another, so it wasn't like the same bacterial infection just getting worse. I do have a LONG history of really bad earaches (ear infections since I was an infant) and I know it's linked to my tonsils. My tonsils are in SUCH bad shape. I never got them taken out, although doctors tried several time to talk me into it when I was younger. I guess I never got around to it??

My tonsils look TORN. They're asymmetrical and have missing pieces with craters. Sometimes, I get tonsil stones too. Nasty things. The back of my throat ALWAYS has bright pink bumps. I'm a first semester student nurse, and I can't seem to find the link between all these. I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but one of my patients recently passed away... and it all started out with neck cancer. I don't know what the heck I should do, whether I should get my tonsils taken out because they seem to be a host for bacteria, instead of a protection against it. I get Strep throat during the winter almost every year, my tonsils get really nasty with exudate, and my Dr. warned that this bacteria is usually recurrent this way. Yes, I do get antibiotics for it, and I do finish the treatment. If I get my tonsils taken out, I don't want to get a stupid infection in the incision site or have trouble healing though. I'm kind of scared to do so.

Does Chronic Bronchitis imply that it is ONLY caused by infectious microbiota? Is it always present? I guess it's hard to understand when I've always had it. PLEASE HELPPP.

    • ANSWER:
I honestly thought I was the only one who ever had this same problem!! As a child, every time I went outside with my hair wet or even walking barefoot on cold concrete, it never failed, I would either end up in the hospital with pneumonia or feel like I was going to die coughing a lung up with bronchitis. I didn’t know much about the bacteria and viruses, but it seems as though I outgrew it over the years. Now, I never dry my hair and I am rarely sick with bronchitis. I do, however, take precautions such as washing my hands frequently and be generous with hand sanitizer. Always use clean Kleenexes and Q-tips that have been stored in a sterilized container. Limit the time you use listening to music headsets – one hour of wearing headsets can increase your chances of bacteria growing in your ears of up to 700 times! I think the answer to your question varies from person to person, so you need to discuss your situation with your physician to devise a more proactive plan to combat both viruses and bacteria. Hope that helps!

  14. QUESTION:
Should I worry that I have HIV?
Ok hi guys. About 3 weeks ago I engaged in unprotected oral sex with a partner of unknown status. She performed oral on me for a few minutes which doesn't really bother me and I licked on her vagina and stuck my tongue in once for about 2 seconds which does bother me because even though I didn't feel or seen any vaginal fluids blood or any type of wetness were detectable i feel like I may still have gotten something. After this encounter I woke the next day with a sore throat and thought nothing of it the next day I noticed my left tonsil had swollen up a bit and had white stuff on both sides. I had no other symptoms given for HIV even though I know you do not have to have any symptoms to be positive. During the week I felt normal and thought I just had strep throat so I went to the ER and they said its was probably strep gave me a shot and a pill and sent me on my way with prescribed antibiotics. So I began taking the antibiotics, the pain went away almost instantly but still had white spots on my tonsils. I began to have watery diarrhea due to the antibiotics and a loss of appetite. Finished the full 10 day treatment of antibiotics I felt better regained my appetite and the white spots were going away. This week (the third week) I was back to eating and feeling like regular but still a little swellness on my left tonsil no diarrhea but just recently that unable to eat feeling hit me again. Could I have gotten infected and seen these symptoms come and go so fast??? I mean from all I was told and read it takes 2-6 weeks to develop symptoms and mine have come and gone. Sorry for the long post but I'm really worried that I have it. I mean what else could it be? This being my first sexual encounter I never want to have sex again!

  15. QUESTION:
Tested Negative for Strep and Mono?
Im 26 years old and about 1.5 months ago came down with what was thought to be a bad case of strep (fever, painfully sowllen tonsils covered with pus)...went to Dr. and was prescribed Medrol 6-day dose pack and 850mg Amoxicillan. Felt better and throat looked nice and healthy within 2 days, but after I finished the full course 3 days later my tonsils had white spots on them and was swollen again (no fever or pain). So I went back and took a full course of Spectricef which cleared my throat up again. 3 days after I finished that the spots and swollen tonsils were back. So I went back to Dr. and they did a swab and took blood and everything came back negative. I'm worried this will come back a fourth time after I finish this medicine which is Bactrim ds this time.

As for my background I grew up getting tonsilitis alot. They never removed my tonsils. But when I was 18 it took 3 consecutive rounds of treatments with antibiotics before it finally went away. Im guessing my tonsils are pretty beat up by now. I brush and floss twice a day and gargle with warm salt water everyday so I am diligent with my oral hygiene. I know I'll need to follow up with an ENT if it's back for round 4 but any suggestions in the meantime what this might be? Might it actually be tonsilitis again?
Forgot to add that I also have changed toothbrushes each time it's come back.

do you have any cliche habbits for getting sick? Like being outside in the rain, sharing drinks all the time, kissing a large variety, sharing cigarettes? Yeah if you smoke when you have bronchitis it last weeks longer than it should. Idk if anything here helps

  16. QUESTION:
    Tonslitis and work?
    Hi

I am on the end of my 2nd day of penicilian antibiotics for my tonsilitis treatment. I felt really bad yesterday but today i was feeling much better even though the throat area stil hurts.

Would it be ok if i go back to work in two days even if my tonsils still hurt a little. I will try not to strain it too much. Would i cause problems for the recovery process?

I am not contagious buy then i gathered?

    • ANSWER:
Whenever you have an infection, you are considered non-contagious after 24 hours of antibiotics. If you are feeling better, it is fine to go back to work. Because you are still ill and in the healing stage, you may feel very tired after your first day back to work.

  17. QUESTION:
Eroded tonsils? What does that mean in naturopathic medicine?
I have had issues with my tonsils my entire life. The first time I got strep was 2 years old, and I had it 16 times between the ages of 4-6. My pediatrician put me on 3 straight months of antibiotics at that point, since my parents would not have them removed. I've only had strep a handful of times since then, but my tonsils have been a continual battle since. They are almost always swollen, and more often than not, sore and red. Sometimes they get a white stringy infection on them, which has tested negative for strep every time, and I have continual tonsil stones. I have recently been talking to my doctor about just getting them taken out. Since he is a naturopath, he would rather try to treat them before removing them, since I have never tried natural methods to help them. As he put it, I have been fighting them for 21 years, and what's a few extra months trying to treat and repair the problem before deciding on cutting out lymphatic tissue permanently. I agree that it's worth a shot, and his last treatment worked amazingly well (I had been battling some form of long term infection for years that sucked all my energy, multiple rounds of antibiotics from my GP had not cleared it up ot helped in the least, and after 3 months on a couple homeopathic supplements, my elevated white blood cell count dropped to normal and I feel like myself again- energetic and not sick).

Anyways, he said that my tonsils are eroding because of such long term inflammation and infection. He gave me 2 supplements, one to clear out scar tissue and the "erosion" and another to help rebuild new healthy tissue. I'm seeing him again in 3 months to review if they've helped, and if not, then he will asses whether or not recommending they are removed and referring me to a specialist. I ran out of time because I had to get back to work, and I never really got to ask what exactly it means to have eroding tonsils? How exactly do they "erode" and what sort of health implications does eroded lymph tissue have? Thanks for your answers!
Also, I am not asking your opinion on homeopathic treatments. My naturopathic doctor is very good about referring me to a specialist if he feels traditional medicine is necessary or should be used in conjunction with my natural treatments.
As I was saying, I am not asking personal opinions on natural medicine. I'm still slightly skeptical of it myself. However, all I know is I had a serious issue that was negatively impacting my life for a couple years, and not getting better in the least with traditional medicine, and it had nothing to do with my tonsils btw. After giving homeopathic medicine a try as a last resort to get my life back, I found it worked absolute miracles. It is why I'm giving it another try for another seemingly incurable ling term problem before hacking out part of my body.

    • ANSWER:
Children are more prone to infections when they are young, and tonsillitis is often of viral origin, and not always bacterial as many people assume. Now, I had persist issues with my tonsils when I was a child and I've had mine removed. In some cases this is needed, persistent courses of antibiotics are never ideal and there is actually little evidence that they alter symptom duration in most cases. However, despite clear guidelines that are in situ, many GPs are a bit rash when prescribing antibiotics, if you are fit and healthy the body is usually able to clear mild and minor bacterial infections, so quite often antibiotics aren't needed- just monitoring, and patient compliance.... to return for further advice if things get worse.

Tonsils can atrophy in early adulthood. The problem is that recurrent infections can turn tonsil tissue into a nidus for anaerobic bacteria. If you are having persistent problems with your tonsils >5 infections a year) see if you can be referred to an ENT, perhaps with a view to have them removed. Nothing in AltMed is going to be of much benefit here.

Homeopathy is nonsense, And your tonsils have not eroded- Naturopaths are basically quacks.

No, you had an illnesses that got better (as many if not most do, with or without treatment) that coincided with you taking sugar or starch pills (essentially all homeopathy is). You don't know that homeopathy was the result of your improvement.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, if you want to waste your time and money on implausible concepts, thats' entirely your prerogative. I've given you sensible, rational advice. What you do with it is up to you.

  18. QUESTION:
Can tonsillitis and pus in tonsils clear away on their own?
I have a chronic tonsillitis. had lots of treatment and in the last couple of month didn't really have it. Just a slight sensitivity in tonsils. Two weeks ago I changed my European residence and now live in South Africa. Suddenly after my move I felt the sore in my throat but it wasn't too bad (i still could swallow, didn't have fever and felt fine) next day the sore was the same (mild) but I saw lots of pus in tonsils.I never really had pus in tonsils before. Just a very bad sore throat and slight fever. Today is a third day and I feel pretty fine, the pus started to go away itself. I don't know what does it mean. I did go to doctor and she did test for cultures but it is going to be ready in three days. She gave me prescription for antibiotics but since I visited doctor I see that I am getting better myself. Have my body cured itself from a long history of tonsillitis? Should I still go on antibiotics in this situation?

  19. QUESTION:
A problem with my tonsils. Plz help me!!?
3 yrs back, i started feeling these pains in the sides of my throat and there was constant foul taste and smell in my mouth. When i tried to check myself in the mirror, i could see these really enlarged organs at the back of my mouth. It was getting difficult for me to swallow food and so couple of months later when it got unbearable I went for homeopathic treatment where the doc put me on homeopathic pills and also asked me to do saline gargles daily. He also asked me to stay away from all cold or sour stuff. I wasnt allowed have anything oily etc. I took the treatment for an year, i hardly felt any better. Then we went to an ENT specialist for a second opinion. He diaganosed me with chronic tonsillitis and put me on antibiotics for couple of weeks and when there wasn't much results he suggested tonsillectomy. My parents were horrified but after all the stuff i showed them about the procedure over the internet, they finally relented. 2 months later, i got my tonsillectomy done. Its been an year since the surgery. I took all the post surgery precautions and medication i was prescribed. But about a week later I saw this white stuff popping up at the place where the tonsils were. I consulted the doc and he told me it was nothing major, just some food material stuck there and he told me to gargle with warm water or prick it out with a soft bristle toothbrush. I tried everything , but it kept coming back. Its making me smell really bad and I was too embarrassed to go back to the doc. I really need help people.

    • ANSWER:
Firstly, I am an ENT specialist who ha done a great many tonsillectomies. I've seen it all.

In the aftermath of tonsillectomy... say for a 2-3 weeks afterwards... a thick shaggy whitish membrane covers the healing area. It may putrify if it lasts long enough. A single course of the right antibiotic during this healing phase deals with it well.

But you are a year post-op. It's fully healed yet you are still having accumulations.
It sounds as if your tonsils may not have been completely removed... were they?
There are some new "low-pain" tonsillectomy techniques that intentionally leave the deepest parts of the tonsils intact.

If some of the tonsil is left in the tonsil bed -intentionally or not- this re-accumulation of foul debris is a possible outcome.

There is no shame in being sick or burdened with a symptom like this.
PLEASE go back to your surgeon and show him how things are. He should be very interested and sympathetic: this is HIS handiwork, not yours!

  21. QUESTION:
    Recurring Infections?
Since October I have had massive tonsils with white spots. First doctors gave me amoxicillin, and the infection came back/ never fully left. Then I got penicillin, that gave me a bit more energy but I still didn't full recover. Then I had clindamycin and seemed to get better, but still didn't fully recover. About 9 days after I finished my clindamycin, I got another tonsil infection. I got more clindamycin and am about to get another infection since I am on day 9 after finishing that treatment. I don't know what to do. My lymph nodes in my throat are sore and swollen, im very phlegm-y and am constantly "horking" yellowish bullets of mucous, my ears are sore although they aren't infected say the doctors, and I *had* hot potato voice for awhile, Ive been told by an ENT specialist I saw that I don't have an abscess, and my strep tests were negative as were two separate mono blood tests. My throat swabs didn't grow any bacteria so they couldn't decipher what was causing the infections. I don't want to keep taking antibiotics because although after 2 week treatments of clindamycin the white spots dissipate, they cause side effects like my stomach hurts and i get furry tongue and metallic tastes. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing recurring tonsil infections that are resistant to antibiotics if mono and strep tests are negative? I can feel my lymph nodes getting sore and swollen again and my left tonsil getting white spots again... I know a new full blown infection is imminent. Any advisement is appreciated!
No one else in my house has caught whatever it is, and I live with three roommates. And my boyfriend doesn't seem to have it, although his tonsils are large, he hasn't had them infected or swollen lymph nodes at all. It does seem to get worse usually a few days after we are together if I'm not on antibiotics though...

any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
You probably have chronic tonsillopharyngitis, and because of the wrong antibiotic usage, resistance has developed. Have a thoroat culture, and regarding to the antibiotic resistance of the bacteria formed re-establish your prescriptions. If you have stomach problems do not lessen the doses, have your doctor know it and make him prescribe antiulcer treatment. By the time the enfection will be resolved but it may have up to 2 months to fully recover. If you give up, resistance develops more and strep bacteria may cause cross reactioning with your own immune system. So, without treatment you may have renal failure, romatoid fever, or rashes by time. When the enfection resolves you probably have to get a surgery, tonsillectomy.

NEVER GIVE UP MEDICAL CARE, FIND A BETTER SPECIALIST, FIND ANOTHER HOSPITAL, BUT YOUR SOLUTION IS ALWAYS WITHIN THE LIMITS OF MODERN MEDICINE.

  24. QUESTION:
Yeast Infection gone wrong? (Please don't be rude)?
I was on antibiotics for a tonsil infection when I started noticing I was very itchy in my vaginal area and was having a lot of odorless, white, clumpy discharge. I bought the Vagisil pH tester and the results said that my pH level was indicative of a yeast infection. It was my first, so I just made an appointment with my OB GYN and bought some Vagisil anti itch cream. The doctor wasn't able to see me until the following week. And, by that time the itching and irritation had become so unbearable, that I went out and got some Monistat 3.

I just finished the third treatment and there is little to no itching or discharge. However, I must have been scratching myself in my sleep, and I've basically scratched myself raw. I have 6-7 cuts/raw spots and the pain is HORRIBLE. It's so bad I can barely walk, move, or sit down. I tried putting neosporin on it, and it just seemed to make the stinging worse. I've just been taking warm showers, and drying it thoroughly (with a fan). But, the pain is still really intense. I can't even pee without being brought to tears.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was a little worried about the neosporin because it is an antibiotic cream, and antibiotics were the reason I first contracted the yeast infection. However, I don't know if neosporin would have the same effects as amoxcilin. I'm not sure what to do. I just want to relieve the pain, because these spots seem to be healing at a snail's pace. :(

    • ANSWER:
Ouch! I feel ya sista! Ok so what you need to do is first. Where some gloves to bed so hopfully if you start scratching you'll wake up before you do any damage. Take warm sea salt baths. This is not going to feel that awesome at first but it will heal you quicker. When you get out of the bath use neosporin and lay, legs spread, in front of fan. Only Oral antibiotics are strong enough to mess with our PH balance. Amoxcillin is a really strong one too. Use warm washclothes for itching and dont foreget the gloves! I hope you start feeling better... ~ tons of love~

  25. QUESTION:
    Chicken Pox or Side Effects?
I'm a 19 year old female with a history of moderately good health. I rarely get sick, usually a fever at best. However, 2 weeks ago I got diagnosed with tonsillitis. I've taken 7 of the 10 aumoxicilyn (antibiotic) pills. My tonsils aren't swollen or hurting anymore so that's improving. The pills did give me a yeast infection, but I got the cream for that and have done 2 of the 6 internal treatments...

Here's the thing. In the last 2 days I have broken out in a strange rash. It started at my elbows and is strongest there now as itchy, red bumps. Some of the bumps have combined somehow into red patches. It's also that strong on the back of my thighs and my knuckles. Everywhere else on my body, there are only red spots, unprotruding.

I read online that antibiotics can cause rashes, and I don't take them too often, so it may be that.

However, my partner works at a psychiatric hospital and one of the patients has chicken poxs.

    Can anyone help?? thanks.

    • ANSWER:
You would have had to been in contact with someone with chicken pox to get it. Did your partner get it? Most certain it is a reaction to the antibiotic. These allergic reactions can get quite serious and cause anaphalactic shock which causes your throat to swell cutting off your oxygen. Call your doctor about the rash!!! They may want to switch medications for you

    • ANSWER:
Possibly, but it may be that the bacterial infection you have in your tonsils were resistant to the antibiotics you took. So I would suggest another trip to the doctor, who may take a swab for further investigation.

    Bronchitis question again?
I posted a question before here, thank you all for answers before. I finished my bronchitis treatment, and i found funny that first 4 days antibiotics i drinked 3 x day like cocktail of 7 medicines, and other 4 days, less than that like 4 different medications at a time, instead of 7. I dont have any major symptoms like i had profuse sweating, really bad feeling of tiredness like rundown. But still somehow feel my face a bit burning, no temperature just such sensation. Doc also told me I had inflamed tonsils, maybe it's from tonsils and nothing related to bronchitis. I guess Im overreacting, but im kindah person that everything scares me :) .
Did anyone else have such experience? Thank you all!

  28. QUESTION:
Does this sound like tonsillitis or strep throat?
I've had a sore throat for 3 or 4 days now, but no one took me seriously when I said how sore it was. This morning something didn't feel right, so I looked in the mirror, and my tonsils have big white spots on them and the right one is swollen.
I have a doctor appointment in the morning, but I have OCD so I wanna know as much as I can before I go in..
I've heard mixed answers as to whether or not strep throat will produce swollen, spotty tonsils. I've had strep throat once before, but didn't look at my throat in a mirror, so I don't know what it looked like. I know for strep, I'd be given antibiotics and sent on my way.
I read that tonsillitis can't be treated and they pretty much say to let it run its course.
Does it sound like strep throat or tonsillitis, or is the only way to tell a culture? Also, is there any treatment at all for tonsillitis other than getting tonsils removed?
Strep test was positive. On medication for 10 days. Problem solved!

  29. QUESTION:
14 Month old Short of breath?
My son has been to the doctor 3 times in 7 days. Last monday i took him because he had a bumpy rash all over him, no other symptoms. The doctor looked at him and got a second opinion and both came to the conclusion that he had a viral infection.

Thursday evening i took him to a night clinic because he looked awful, he had a sore under his eye one around his mouth and another on his hand, he has a low grade fever that would come and go his eyes were red and puffy and just looked ill. This doctor then told me he had impetigo and fifths disease and would treat him for a sinus infection, she told me his bumpy rash could be and indication of strep but he wouldn't open his mouth for a good enough look. He was prescribed omnicef and and antibiotic ointment for his impetigo. Well friday he started to cough a little bit, and it got worse over the past 3 days, his impetigo is healing up nicely, still has the bumpy rash but i had to take him back to his regular doc today, he was acting fine but about 10 minutes after we got there he started acting strange, he doesn't sit still EVER and he wanted me to hold him all of a sudden, he started making a grunting sound and sounded short of breath, at first i thought he was constipated but it continued for about 30 more minutes, when he got to see his doctor he checked his lungs and she said they sounded clear, she then checked his oxygen levels and they were normal. She checked his ears which have tubes in them, one looked red around the ear drum but no drainage coming from it, she said his tonsils looked big. but he is on antibiotics so shouldn't that be taking care of those two issues? Anyway, she gave him a breathing treatment which raised his oxygen level from 97 to 99 and sent me home with breathing treatments and to watch him closely and bring him back in the morning if he was still having the breathing issues. When we got home my son had a 101.1 fever and would barely move. He doesn't want us ot put him down at all. He has had his second breathing treatment and is still breathing hard.

What is going on with my son, im really worried.

    • ANSWER:
101 is not that big of a fever for a child your son's age. Him wanting to be held could be because he is hurting. . .sore throat, ears, headache? All of these could be reasons that he wants to be held. His oxygen levels are not that low. . .my daughter has to have breathing treatments for a couple of weeks due to an upper respiratory infection so I know that is sucks to do them on such a young child. Breathing hard can also be a sign of an upper respiratory infection, if his glands are swollen it could be making it hard to breath. You have been to different Dr.s who seem to be telling you a lot of the same things. If taking him to the ER would make you feel better, then go ahead. Chances are that nothing is going to be as quick of a fix as you would like, these kinds of things have to work themselves out. It has only been 3 days with the breathing. Like I said earlier, my daughter wa on the treatments for almost 2 wks every 2-4 hours for about 2 wks.

  30. QUESTION:
What the Doctor said? Is This True?
My friend has had tons of problems with her throat and tonsils, and constantly gets sore throats. Whenever we have medical issues, we always go to the Health Center here on our campus for medication and treatment. Well lately i've been battling a sore throat and I was prescribed antibiotics. I went to my friend to see if she had salt so that I could gargle with, and she informed me that I shouldn't gargle with salt water. Apparently the Doctor at the health center told her that gargling with salt water only makes it worse. He asked her if she had a wound would she rub salt in it? Because gargling with salt water is pretty much the same thing. I've always heard that gargling with salt water helps....but is this not the case? If not then what else could I gargle with to soothe the pain? The medicine is taking too long to kick in.

    • ANSWER:
gargling with salt water will HELP you with your sore throat.
salt kills bacteria immediately. Whatever that doctor said to your friend does not mean it applies to you.
He probably said that because if you have an infection (like actual white spots growing infection) then when you gargle with saltwater it hurts.
Of course it hurts, because bacteria is being killed.

But gargling with salt water (warm) is one of the BEST things you can do for your sore throat, infection or not.
I've had many many viral infections of the throat. Warm salty water gargles have always helped me.

  31. QUESTION:
Can Strep throat be cured naturally?
I only put that question on here to say YES it can. I have seen a lot of people say that you have to have antibiotics to cure Strep throat. If that is what you chose to do, you have every right to chose that method, but I am here to tell you that I have cured it twice without going to a doctor. I felt symptoms coming on and started doing hydrogen peroxide mouth gargles, every 4 to 6 hours. I also put hydrogen peroxide drops in my ears to get rid of it there. I also gargled with salt water 4 times a day. I used Young Living Essential Oils the Oregano oil and Thieves oil by mouth 3 to 4 times a day with juice to follow or water. It does burn some, but I know it killed the strep. I have no throat pain and no other symtoms. I actually feel fantastic. I know I had strep because my daughter was diagnosed with it on Friday and on Saturday I had the red throat and white spots on the tonsils. It is possible to heal without antibiotics. The drug companies just want you to believe that antibiotics are the only way. Just remember I am not saying that everyone should do this type of treatment. It is not for children. I am simply giving my opinion and giving my results. It works.....

  32. QUESTION:
I desperately need to know if I have chlamydia in my throat?
Okay so a week a go I went to get tested for Chlamydia and it came out positive. Then I made an appointment to get treatment but two days before that I was with my bf and I performed oral sex on him. I know he gave it to me so I got some antibiotics that they gave me plus some for him and now I woke up this morning and my throat hurt when I swallowed and there is something white by my tonsils is this Chlamydia in my mouth? If so is that treatment going to count to cure it? or what should I do
I already got treatment for it..its been 3 days but I just want to know if it is chlamydia in my throat if its going to cure that too

    • ANSWER:
You can rarely catch Chlamydia from oral sex because the cultures do not survive well in the throat. To me it sounds like you may have strep throat or mono. Both would cause trouble swallowing & white spots on the tonsils. A blood test & culture swab would tell you which one you had. I'd say your best bet is to talk to your doctor about it.

  33. QUESTION:
I've got shortness of breath about 3 weeks after lung infection?
About a month ago I felt my neck clogging up and had shortness of breath. I went to the doctor and she said my tonsils were swollen and that she noticed some sort of white thing on the tonsil. She listened to my lungs and then prescribed me anti inflammation medicine. A week later she prescribed me clarithromycin. After being done with the antibiotics I still had these "bouts" of shortness of breath.

They would start as a feeling of clogging in my nose and neck and then proceed to wheezing and SOB. I went to the doctor again and she took samples of my neck which came back normal for haemolitic streptococcus group C. My doc said this type of streptococcus is mild and giving the antibiotics took care of most of it there's no need to pursue more treatment. I came back again with the same shortness of breath problem and she took me to a Ear nose and throat specialist. She said she didn't notice anything unusual.

The SOB thing had calmed down and for almost a full week I had no attacks at all. Then suddenly it started again and the ear nose and throat specialist, after looking at an ex ray of my face, diagnosed me with maxillary sinusitis and prescribed antibiotics again.

The SoB is still there and I'm scarred. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Could it take this long to recover from that lung infection?

    • ANSWER:
we may have something similar, been on antibiotics now since 9/28, for bronchitis, sinusitis, got the shortness of breath right after being on the antibiotics for 3 days, was wondering if there was something regarding the antibiotic that is causing the shortness of breath, perhaps an unlisted chemical in the coating of the meds. Doc said no. Put me on prednisone which seemed to open up the breathing passages in my lungs, now weaning me off of the prednisone. Also started taking Mucinex DM again, the regular one only 2 times a day.

very scary not being able to get in that breath, have you been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis, asthma? These are classified now in the COPD department, Congestive Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which is what I have.

Ask one of your doctors to schedule you for a Pulmonary Function test to find out if you are breathing at your full capacity, think that is where I would start if I were you.

Also, to try to help your breathing, try inhaling (just smelling it) Vicks Vaporub, don't get it in your nose tho, just sniff it into each nostril several times a day and see if that helps you, it seems to help me. Good luck, hope there is nothing bad wrong with you and this illness clears up for you real soon.

  34. QUESTION:
    possible Lymphoma diagnosis?
I am 22 yrs old, For as long as I can remember my neck (tonsil and lymph node) area will occasionally swell. Sometimes it is accompanied with a sore throat and sometimes it isn't. The swelling gets so severe that you can physically see the swelling from the outside. Well, this past February my neck swelled again, thinking nothing of it I went to my primary physician and was diagnosed with tonsillitis. He gave me an antibiotic shot along with a steroid shot (to speed up the antibiotics and reduce swelling). I was also prescribed a round of antibiotics orally. The medications didn't help much and 10 days later I was back at the doctors office with the same symptoms and was given the same treatment. This routine lasted until July... I can honestly say there were only a few days out of every month that my neck was not swollen. My doctor tested for strep, rapid strep, mono, thyroid conditions and did blood work. All of the results came back negative. He referred me to an ornithologist (ear nose and throat specialist), who took one look at me and my charts and scheduled a tonsillectomy for that very week. He said my tonsillitis was causing my lymph nodes to swell and by removing the tonsils, all of the swelling would be alleviated.Sooo... after 5 months of constant pain and swelling my tonsils were removed. Unfortunately afterward I was still plagued with the constant swelling and pain in my neck... everything was exactly the same as before my surgery.I switched primary physicians and the new doctor told me the same thing and prescribed antibiotics. FINALLY after feeling hopeless and terrible for almost a year, I went back to my ornithologist yesterday. He was surprised to see me back in the office and felt my nodes in the chest and neck area. All of the other nodes except for the ones that are by my tonsils felt normal. He said he was puzzled as to why they were still swollen. He reviewed my entire chart and said there are no indications as to why they are still swelling. The tissue samples from my tonsils were normal and so was all of the blood work that was done before the surgery... I have been doing research online and lymphoma keeps popping up. My doctor scheduled me a CT scan with contrast in 2 days. As for symptoms of lymphoma, yes im always tired but i have 2 toddlers, yes i have night sweats but im hot natured, and yes i have dropped from 200lbs to 165lbs since march BUT I was prescribed weight loss medication because I gained a lot of weight from getting the steroid shots every 2 weeks. Could Lymphoma be a possibility? Will the CT scan give me answers? Is there any other possibilities? Does anyone suffer from the same chronic pain and swelling in only the lymph nodes under the back of the jaw? And why are only these nodes swelling and not the others? PLEASE HELP!!! Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
I do not know who the guy above me is, but he is not a doctor.
There is no reason to think you have lymphoma.
Night sweats with lymphoma are not just feeling hot they are drenching sweats that you have to change clothing or sheets.
It sounds like you have an infection.

  35. QUESTION:
    Bad case of Tonsillitis?
I've had Tonsillitis for the past 4 days now and i am in complete agony, i was prescribed some antibiotics but they are yet to take any effect. One of my tonsils is completely covered in white while the other is around 75%. I can't seem to find a picture of anyone having it as bad as that which kinda worries me. I have tried the warm salt water treatment but it seems to have no effect at all, sometimes even making it worse for a few hours. Will this go away anytime soon or should i go to the hospital? I don't know how much longer i can take this pain, any advice would be great, thanks

    • ANSWER:
I found this remedy to be excellent my grand kids used to get tonsillitis so bad that their temperature's were sky high, I received this remedy from and old African lady. Buy a packet of Alum Powder, boil water place water in a 250 ml glass dissolve 1 teaspoon in the glass of water let cool down and gargle every 2 hours. The alum will shrink the tonsils and you will get relief. I promise you it does help ! Stay away from milk products because milk increases the fever, you can also try 2 disprin/aspro [if you not allergic] dissolved in water and gargle, this will also help to reduce the pain. Drink plenty of fluids, I believe in purified fresh water, fruit juice not the bought one. Good luck it worked for my grand kids, it should work for you !

  36. QUESTION:
I'm so angry at my baby's doctors!?
Tell me what you would do or if you have had a similar experience. My baby has constantly been sick since Nov. with 2 bouts of RSV and continuous respiratory infections. He also has had a terrible wet cough nonstop. I've been to doctor after doctor. One doctor gave us a nebulizer, Singulair and suggested he had asthma or allergies but insisted the sicknesses were all viral and prescribed no antibiotic. I asked the the emergency room doctor (when he had RSV) why he was constantly getting sick and about his cough and he said he was just there to stabilize treatment and that I could drive 3 hours to the next town to consult an allergy specialist. He also called a few days later to say that the xray could POSSIBLY suggest pneumonia but couldn't be sure and still no antibiotics. I went to another doctor and he said it was all viral respiratory infections because my son goes to daycare and that I"ll be thankful he's building his immunity now. (I paid 0 for that great advice) Finally I just knew I had to keep trying and the doctor I went to today immediately said he had a sinus infection and prescribed antibiotics and is referring me to an ear, throat, and nose specialist to be evaulated for sleep apnea or infected tonsils since he hasn't been wanting to eat. It makes me so angry at the other doctors for causing my son to suffer so long. They just seemed to shrug their shoulders and say there was nothing they could do. I even found on the internet that all his symptoms matched sinusitus and bronchitis but these doctors are such idiots they couldn't figure it out! They just chalked it up to daycare and allergies. So I think when we go to this specialist I will have them fax all his results to these idiots so maybe they can learn from their mistakes. Is there some rule now that doctors don't prescribe antibiotics anymore?! Just listening to me son breathe I could hear the rattle in his chest and his swollen sinuses. They just acted like oh well, he's playing so he's fine. What else is he supposed to do, be on his deathbed in order to get help? He's just making the best of it even though he has been feeling very badly.

    • ANSWER:
sorry for your pain and your son's . i know you must be livid. i guess just be thankfull you know which docs not to go to and that you have a happy baby who can make the best of things. hope he feels better soon. happy mother's day

  37. QUESTION:
Seeing my doctor again tomorrow because I don't feel any better?
I am a 21 year old woman. I eat extremely healthy (an all organic well balanced diet) with no junk food ever, take vitamins and nutritional supplements, I don't take any prescription or OTC medications at all, I exercise, get about 8 hours of sleep a night, drink plenty of water and don't drink alcohol or do drugs. About a year and a half ago, I suddenly started feeling really run down all the time, started getting acne on my face, chest and back (which I never had before), extremely swollen lymph nodes in my neck (like the size of small eggs swollen), and white firm balls of smelly stuff that comes out of my tonsils. I went to my old GP, couldn't actually see him, then passed off by his rude nurse who gave me some antibiotics and basically told me to go away. So I just delt with it, up until about 3 months ago, when my boss started noticing me falling asleep at work (I have "episodes" that last about 10 minutes where I physically cannot stay awake no matter how hard I try, then I black out, then I come to and feel normal again). I decided rather than go back to my GP's surly nurse, I would see a naturopath instead since I believe in treating things naturally anyways.

My new doctor is a very nice man, he comes highly recommended, and in my opinion takes a very sensible approach to natural medicine (he isn't off in the twilight zone and uses traditional medicine when applicable). In my initial visit, he spent an hour listening to what exactly my issues were, tested me for strep in his office (negative), reviewed all my supplements (and he made some suggestions on what to change and add) gave me a b-vitamin shot, and sent me for some blood tests (thyroid function, white blood cell count, mono, iron and calcium levels). Everything was pretty normal, my iron was a little on the lower end of the normal range. He put me on a light iron supplement every other day and told me to take a different liquid multivitamin to see if that helped, and told me to come back in 2 months to discuss how I feel, and he explained that this may be a very long haul to find out what's wrong, and that he will figure out the problem before giving me any type of treatment (I like that idea). It's been 3 months, I still feel like absolute crap, my acne is worsening, my tonsils still have smelly white crap coming out and my lymph nodes still look like eggs in my throat. My appointment is tomorrow afternoon. What do I say to him? I'm in the same condition I was 3 months ago, and actually feel slightly worse (I will admit the portion of my skin that the acne isn't on, like my belly and legs, looks significantly better after taking the liquid multi so it had some effect). Are there any suggestions you all may have to ask him about? Or ideas what may be wrong so I can ask him to test me for it? I like that my doctor isn't going to treat me before he knows what's actually wrong, but I feel like hell every single day, and the sooner we can figure this out, the sooner I can feel alive again.
I forgot to add, when he did the mono test, he also tested for epstein-bar virus. I was negative for both.
I do not care to use acne creams to cover it up, I want to figure out what is CAUSING the acne. I do not want internal birth control either. I am getting married in October, and we want to have kids in the next few years (yet another reason I'm trying to be healthy and feel better). I think it is unnatural to do that to your body, probably damages your reproductive organs in some way, and I refuse to do so. And I certainly don't want to see any more doctors who pass off my problems with a band-aid prescription without getting to the root cause. My doctor has also told me, if he feels it necessary, he will refer me to a specialist, but he will check in with that specialist to make sure I am getting proper attention, not just shoved pills to treat symptoms without a diagnosis.

    • ANSWER:
Swollen lymph nodes means you are fighting some infection or virus . The tonsils are forming tonsil stones called tonsillith's which are usually very hard stones and when broken really do stink. The can form in anyone with tonsils A friend removed one and I still remember the smell, and it was years ago. I would want to be tested for any STD's or anything that would lower immune system functioning. You may be suffering from a few small conditions and looking to connect them in to one large one that is not there. I am more concerned about the lymph nodes than anything else. They are the one sure sign of something going on that should not be. As nice as you physician is I would want a definitive diagnosis and not a trial and error search. This can be done even if you have to check into a hospital. It has been going on too long and you have real symptoms. There is no point in being alarmed as there are so many things that can cause this so don't jump to conclusions. Even parasites can cause all your symptoms.

  38. QUESTION:
sore throat, headaches and dry cough for about a month?
sore throat and cough for a month?
I am an eighteen year old female and I have had an ongoing dry cough accompanied by an awful sore throat and occasional headaches since thanksgiving. my tonsils are also visibly swollen all the time. However, I have been to the doctor three times since thanksgiving, been on fifteen days of antibiotics for "bronchitis", but still no improvement. I have seen three different physicians and none have been able to help. I am starting to get very frustrated and a little worried as the symptoms have not gone away with any type of treatment so far. please help!!

    • ANSWER:
Dude, sorry, but it sounds like you have a virus. There is nothing that works better than doing what you can to relieve the symptoms.

For the runny nose, go to the drugstore and ask the pharmacist for Sudafed. (It is behind the counter now.) Sudafed dries up nasal secretions.

If you are sneezing, ask for an antihistamine, preferably a Claritin product because it is non-sedating.

For the aches and pains, you can take Motrin, which is a fine choice. If Motrin is not enough, you can stagger Motrin with Tylenol, taking each every four hours but with a staggering such that you are taking one of the two every two hours and the other the next two hours.

For the sore throat the lozenges are OK but you might find a spray called Chloraspetic works better.

There is an herbal preparation called echinacea. When taken as a whole the medical studies have shown that it does not work for a cold, but some individual studies show it does work.

You can take extra vitamin C but not more than 1000 mg per day.

Finally, there are some zinc preparations at the drugstore that some people claim help, and some studies back that up.

In medicine there is a saying: for a cold you can medicate heavily and be cured in 7-10 days. If you do nothing you will feel better in 7-10 days.

If you have influenza vs. a cold, you can get prescription meds. A flue comes on very suddenly, with a high fever and headache and joint pain, and a dry cough. Dry cough means you cough but nothing comes up.

      hope u feel better

  39. QUESTION:
How do I comfort my friend, I'm in tears myself?
Hey, so my friend (she's in 7th grade) has a 10 year old sister and she's having some problems. If you'd like, read the super long email below sent from her mom. If not, I'll sum it up at the bottom. They'll be a dash-line where it ends.

Tia was born full-term 10 years ago last month (March). She was slightly jaundiced but otherwise healthy. We took her home and returned when she was 3 days old due to her choking and slightly turning blue after she nursed and while she slept. Our oldest daughter had moderate to severe GERD so we were very familiar with the symptoms and assumed Tia had the same problem. The doctors agreed and put her on medication and an apnea monitor. At 2 weeks of age Tia was hospitalized for Jaundice. At 6 weeks she was hospitalized for RSV. Tia was again hospitalized for RSV when she was around 18 months old. She continued to cough, choke, gag and vomit massive amounts of mucous and slept in 15 minute increments. We lived in and out of emergency rooms, hospitals and doctors offices. She has even been rushed by ambulance from the doctor’s office to the hospital. Over the entire 10 year span Tia has had 2 sleep studies, she has been scoped 3 times, checking all of her airways, tonsils, adenoids, lungs, scarring, etc., she has had 2 MRI’s, 2 EEG’s, 2 EKG’s, 2 Cystic Fibrosis tests (she was borderline), countless x-rays, allergy tests, immune tests and so on. She has been on every nebulized drug available, she has been on numerous steroids and antibiotics and nothing works, no inhalers, no allergy meds, nothing! She spent 3 days with an oximeter attached to her which indicated she has intermittent hypoxia…but why. No one can find the cause of Tia’s breathing problems, her constant dips in oxygen, her lack of oxygen while sleeping. The sleep tests confirmed she is not getting enough oxygen but that there is no obstruction, she does not have Apnea. We have countless videos of her odd breathing while she is asleep….the doctors are alarmed by what they see and hear but again, cant figure out what is causing it. Once Tia clears and starts breathing again she is no longer blue and shows no sign whatsoever of being ill or having problems. (note: there have been times where Tia was seen by various specialists while she was sick and experiencing the breathing problems. They would always try things like Albuterol, Pulmicort, Symbacort….and the list goes on….and nothing would help. 2nd note: Tia has done much better over the past couple of years where she sleeps and has less frequent nights like last night *read below* We thought..hoped she might be outgrowing this problem but sadly she is not.)

Last night was an extremely chaotic stressful night. Tia was fine, took a bath, brushed her teeth and went to bed. She has been recuperating from what the doctors initially thought might be whooping cough but she was not congested and she was only coughing a few times per day. Shortly after she went to bed I could hear some really odd sounds coming from her room….sort of a grumbling. When I went in I found Tia blue in the face struggling to get air. She was coughing, choking and she was completely congested. I screamed for my husband and the two of us raced to try everything we have learned to do in the past to help her breathe. Last night was the worst in 10 years. If we had been asleep, in the shower or both downstairs where we didn’t hear her…..she would have been gone. Thankfully that is not the case, I had the phone in my hand to call 911 but we were able to help her clear her airways and then she was fine. I took her to the doctors today and after giving him the details he said that was very consisted with Cyanotic Episodes and that we should immediately call 911, don’t take any chances. The only reason we were hesitant to call is because we have done that so many times in the past and they end up not doing anything for her. They give her a breathing treatment and call it a day. This has broken us financially, this has broken us physically and has broken us mentally. We are exhausted. BUT, we have not lost our determination to figure out what this child needs! (*note: the doctor is not convinced it was whooping cough because her symptoms have resembled whooping cough all of her life. It isn’t possible that she had whooping cough 4-6 times per year….is it?) Tomorrow we go back to the Pulmonologist and in a week we go back to the Neurologist at the MIND clinic an hour away.

Please, I beg of you, if you know anyone or have experienced anything like this yourself and know what it is or what we can do to help her…please please please contact us! There has got to be an answer out there somewhere…there just has to be! She has suffered long enough…..more importantly, we don’t want to lose our little girl! Can you help us?
    -------------------------------------------------------

Well, there. I'm in tears. But here's how to sum it up for the people who didn't read i
OMG I guess it was too long and Y!A cut it off

    Suming it up:
My friends sister Tia had trouble breathing as a baby, and it's coming back. The doctors just said it was a 'whooping cough' but it wasn't. Last night her mom heard a growling noise from Tia's room and came in to find Tia blue-faced and choking. The doctors have put her on practically everything, but nothings working.
I'm not looking for answers on how to help, I'm just looking for how to help my friend get through this, it's hurt it really bad emotionally.

  41. QUESTION:
I have been having sever headaches for 4 years and I dont know why?
First let me state that I am a white male of 40 years old. I am using my wife's account to ask this question. I am a vetrean of the US Army, I served for 10 years and I am now on 40% disability. I was born with a kelf pallet and had it surgically corrected a 2 years old. I have been told I have a deviated septem

I have been having very bad headaches for almost 4 years now. I have been to the ENT doctor, and the neurologist. Early on I had my tonsils removed because I was having tonsillitis. After that the ENT Doctor gave the the all clear. Then I was referred to the neurologist and I have taken many different drugs for migrains although I have none of the symptoms that are normally associated with migraines, just very intense hurting in my eyes, behind my eyes, and in and round my eye brows. The pain can be on the right side the left side or both sides at the same time. This past Friday my head was hurting at maybe level 9.5 on my right side, today my head is hurting at about level 8 and on my left side.

I have had an extensive eye exam and everything was normal. I have had an ear exam and ear pleasure tests and everything is normal. I have had MRI, MRA, CT scans of the head and everything is normal.
To date no medication I have taken has helped my headaches with the exception of narcotics. It has been suggested that I have rebound headaches now so I am on treatment for that. Although I have had headaches long before I ever took pain killers of any type and the symptoms of my head aches have not changes at all in all this time. I am currently taking no pain killers at all and I am taking Hydroxyzine amoate 25mg 2, 2 times a day and Prednisone 5mg 3 tables once a day. I have been on this for 10 days. For the first 5 days I hardly had headaches but now the headaches are coming back. Today was a really tough day.

Meds I have taken in the past are:
    Trazodone 50mg
    Amitriptyline 10mg
    neurontin 300mg
    Topiramate 25mg
    Treximet 85mg / 500mg

These are just the ones I still have the bottles for, there were at least 10 other medications I have been on for my headaches. I have also taken every type of nasal spray you can thing of and saline nasal rinses.

Currently I am being seen by a VA pain management doctor and a personal Neurologist. Before my head starting hurting all the time I was never sick and I never took medications of anytype not ever Tylenol. Now about the only thing I have gotten any real relief from is Percocet.

I have been hurting for so long and so bad I stopping rating my pain level by the day and starting rating it by the hour. One of the times I was in the VA clinic being seen I was sitting in the nurses room waiting for the nurse to come in and was looking at the pain level chart they have that has numbers 0 - 10 and smiley faces under each number. The 0 is with a complete smiley face and 10 is with a complete frown. I looked at that picture and realized that I have at least a level 5 all the time and I realized that I have been hurting so long I don't remember what not hurting even feels like.

I am writing this hopping that the right person will see this and say I know exactly what your problem is. I know that has to be something causing my headaches I just know what.

Oh one more thing I just remembered. At the being of the headaches I had taken a lot of antibiotics because I was getting ear infections a lot and once I got a really bad infection on my lip. My lip swelled up to about the size of a golf ball and I got pink eye at the same time. My general practicianer said I had shegals however that spot my lip was the only spot and I had and when I took antibotics it when down and has never been back. That was at least 3 years ago.

Thank you for your help in advance

  42. QUESTION:
    Why am I so sick?
I am a 26 year old, relatively healthy non-smoker who has been sick with various throat, sinus, and upper respiratory issues for nearly three months straight.

In late September, I received antibiotics for strep and almost immediately came down with a cold when the pain in my tonsils were gone. Approximately two weeks later I was prescribed another course of antibiotics for a sinus infection that caused my eyes to swell shut. About two days after those symptoms subsided I had a month-long bout of laryngitis, and an ENT diagnosed soft nodules (blisters) on my vocal cords. I was allowed to return to work after a week of vocal rest and exactly one week after my medical release I had to leave again with strep throat. I'm now on Augmentin for the strep and I woke up last night with a horrible cold again.

I am going crazy trying to figure out why and how I have managed to get this sick! Any advice/ideas/treatments are appreciated.

  43. QUESTION:
How do wisdom teeth affect everything else in my mouth?
My 4 wisdom teeth are all coming in at the same time. They haven't come through the gums, but I could already see the shape and feel them. Can this cause swelling in my tonsils, tongue, and inner cheeks and lips? Of course, I should mention that I am not in pain. Its just light swelling. For example, at first I thought I had a throat infection, so my dr. put me on antibiotic (zpack 5 day) , but I've already finished the treatment, and the swelling doesn't go down. It just feels really uncomfortable. Is it really my wisdom teeth affecting me, or could it be something else? I would really appreciate the help! Self experiences are welcome, as much as professional help. Thank You.

  44. QUESTION:
Why do I always get sick?
I have been getting sick since last Feb. I had back to back strep throat. As soon as I got off the antibiotics for the first strep throat 2 days later I got strep again. The doctors decided to get my tonsils taken out which took place in March. 3 weeks after my tonsils were removed I got a post op. infection. Then in May I got diagnosis with Mono. During the summer I would always get sore throats and fever's. In Oct. I got a real bad cold and then 3 days later when I went back to school as soon as I walked into the door of the school I got really tight and I ended up going home and was taking to the hospital my mom worked at. I got placed on continuous nebulizer treatments for 4 days. When I returned home I was ok at first and now the real bad colds are kicking up again. Doctors don't know what is wrong with me. I keep missing school and I am getting in trouble for that. PLEASE HELP ME!

    • ANSWER:
You can't get in trouble for missing school due to medical illness. School is important, but your health is more important.

Have you had any allergy testing done? Have the doctors checked your immune system? It seems strange that you are suffering so many throat illnesses - have you seen an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist?

I used to get a lot of strep infections (I also had mono) when I was a young teen. I must have just grown out of it, but I would suggest you start with the things that are in your control such as diet, excercise and sleep patterns. Your body will run down quickly if you aren't eating properly and getting enough sleep. You don't state your age, but if you're a young teen you need to be getting anywhere from 8-11 hours of sleep at night. Other than in the first year, there is no greater growth than during puberty, and that can take a lot out of your body.

      Good luck!

  45. QUESTION:
Throat infection that is not strep?
This doesn't seem that serious, but...

I had an a sore throat, fever, headache, and white patches on my tonsils. My tonsils were slightly swollen. I went to the doctor who did a rapid strep test which came back negative, and a blood test which showed a white count of 17000. I took a full course of Amoxicillin, which worked like a charm until it ran out. Then the symptoms slowly started to return. I went back to the doctor and had a throat culture done. I was prescribed Augmentin this time, which has also been working, although there has been some residual throat irritation and an occasional cough. However, three days into the treatment the lymph nodes on my neck became a little swollen. There has also been a little fluid in my left ear over the course of the entire infection. The throat culture came back negative for strep, but the doctor is convinced it is a bacterial infection.

What could it be and what should I do if my symptoms return again after the antibiotic is out?

    • ANSWER:
You go back to the doctor and say that you need a stronger antibiotic. In the meantime, drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest, take every one of those pills on time--to the last one, and eat real meals or real food for real nutrition.

  46. QUESTION:
What to do with an injury to the mouth's soft palate?
Not really sure what I'm hoping to hear but maybe someone had a similar situation and can tell me about it? I'm 25 years old and had some wisdom tooth problems recently. An impacted wisdom tooth was infected and my dentist put me on antibiotics. This past Friday, I went in to have the tooth removed. The tooth was at an angle and difficult to remove, so my dentist had to drill the tooth into two pieces to get it out.

Now, while he was drilling, he accidentally cut what I believe would be called the soft palate of my mouth. It is the fleshy pink part that comes down from the roof of the mouth, covering the throat area where my tonsils are. This was three days ago (tooth pulled Friday afternoon, it's Monday night right now) and while the actual "tooth hole" hurt very little after the extraction, the soft palate cut still hurts. It feels like I have a dull sore throat, and it's just on the side of the cut. Predictably, it hurts to touch it. It's not a horrible pain, nothing I'm too worried about, but it's pretty annoying. I'm on antibiotics to prevent infection and have been regularly taking Advil for the pain. I've also been rinsing with salt water fairly regularly to help the "tooth hole" heal quicker (on dentist's recommendation).

I guess I just want to know if anyone has had a similar situation, if there are any other at-home treatments to speed along recovery, what foods to avoid, and how long a cut on the soft palate generally takes to heal. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
It's been two days now and the soft palate still hurts, especially when eating. Tried to use Peroxyl, but it has alcohol in it and I'm concerned about damaging my stitched up gums. Stitches come out Friday and hopefully the dentist can recommend something. If the gums are adequately repaired, I'll hit the soft palate hard with Peroxyl I guess... Has this happened to anyone else? Any idea how long it takes for soft palate tissue to heal?

  47. QUESTION:
How to get rid of this thick mucus/phlegm?
Okay so here's all the details
I was tested for Cystic Fibrosis w/ a sweat chloride test and it came back boarderline. But then I had a DNA blood test done and it came back negative of having CF...but that I'm just a really chronic mucus maker. I was given a breathing machine with Albutrol...and today I had some really thick mucus where like whenever I tried clearing my throat...nothing happened yet I could feel it back there, like it was hanging on my tonsils or something.
Then I went to an Emergency Clinic and they gave me some Penacilin antibiotic to take for 10 days...but I still have the feeling of phlegm.
Oh yeah...when I tried using the breathing machine, it like hurt my throat and did nothing to help!!
    What I've done so far:
    Had warm soup with broth.
    Had hot tea...kinda helped.
Hot coffee...helped no whatsoever AND coffee is DISGUSTING!!
Did the breathing treatment but didn't help.
And used honey but still didn't help.

    Thanks!

  48. QUESTION:
Why are there white bumps on the back of my throat?
Okay, 5 days ago I came home from school with a 102 fever. However, the next morning my fever was down to 99-100. When I looked at my throat I saw these white bumps on the back wall of my throat. My throat is also a little red and my tonsils are a little swollen however there is no white secretions coming from them. So after seeing these lumps my doctor tested me for strep and the test came up negative. (2 days later I had my doctor test my throat again for strep and the test still came up negative). So anyway, for 5 days total I have been resting and nothing has changed in my throat (although my temperature has returned to normal hovering around 97-98). The white lumps are still there, my throat is a little reddish, my tonsils are a little swollen (but no secretions), and I still have no clue what I have. My doctor said I probably have a virus that will go away in time. He also believes that I do not have mononucleosis as my glands are not swollen and my spleen is not enlarged or sensitive; I also have not been sleepy at all. I have not had a sour stomach at all and have had no problems with digestion (as in barfing or going to the bathroom...) These white bumps on the back of my throat are not going away or getting smaller and this worries me because in about 3 days I am heading to Florida and I do not want to be sick. Does anyone have any idea what type of virus I might have? Also any remedies or treatments that could possibly help my throat would be appreciated too. Thanks

PS. I have been taking an antibiotic for 4 days now and it has done nothing to help my condition (hence why my doctor said he believes its a virus).
